Another Choice

1 Jun

Over the weekend my wife and I were biking down to the new Brooklyn Bridge park, and on our way we decided to grab some food at the latest addition to the Choice empire, Choice DUMBO. The place is really well decorated, as you can see from the picture below.

The food was good, of course, and they even have beer and wine. Oh, and the toilet seat in the men’s room was heated! I was going to take a picture of it, but you know, toilets aren’t that pretty. Also, my dog Jack was pleased to see that they also had a space for him.

Come at the king, you best not miss

Ever since The Village Voice leaked the tapes of Bed-Stuy’s 81st Precinct and all the corruption that goes on there, I’ve been waiting for heads to roll. Well, according to Gothamist, City Council honchos and community leaders (my invite must’ve got lost in the mail) are now calling for the 81st’s precinct leader to be fired.

No doubt something needed to be done, but it seems like a bit of a show, right? I mean, you’re telling me that the council leaders don’t know that cops skew numbers? Not a chance. They know and firing the police chief of the precinct is just damage control. I know about this kind of stuff! I watched The Wire dammit!

Yoga in the park

26 May

This is my wife’s first post here. The only Yoga I know about is Yogi The Bear. I also know about bad jokes.

As reported on Clinton Hill Blog, Lindsay Sage, a yoga instructor at Integral Yoga on 13th Street, recently started offering free yoga classes on Tuesday nights in Fort Greene Park.  I checked it out last night, and found a group of 15 or so assembled in a circle next to the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument.  Lindsay was great, and this particular class focused on holding poses, rather than flowing through sequences.  It was definitely challenging, although even more challenging is focusing on the task at hand when a cute puppy is romping around a few yards away.  If you’re really into the spiritual aspects of yoga, I think you’ll have trouble clearing your mind in this environment.  Luckily, I’m happy to watch puppies while holding Warrior 2.

The classes are held from 7 – 8pm on Tuesday nights.  Lindsay does accept donations, so kick her a couple bucks at the end.

New at the farmer’s market

26 May

Hot Bread, a Brooklyn-based non-profit bakery that supports immigrant women and their cultural baking techniques, can now be found on Saturdays at the Fort Greene Park farmer’s market. My wife and I usually go to the market with a two-pronged attack: She shops for produce while I take our dog Jack to the off-leash time at the park. Since Jack tends to be a humper, we don’t last long, but at least my wife ends up with fresh produce. Now I suppose we can try some of these breads. No baguettes for us though, I think they might be too phallic for Jack to handle.

A look at Hot Bird’s upcoming menu

25 May

I haven’t been to new Clinton Hill bar Hot Bird (corner of Atlantic and Clinton), but I’m Irish and they have beer there, so I’m assuming I’ll be there soon. Part of the lure is the food truck from chef Alan Harding that’s coming to the place, and The Village Voice got a sneak peek at the menu.

I’m vegetarian and the menu looks to be a bit heavy on the meat, but again, Hot Bird has beer, so I’ll be there either way.

My favorite from the exhibit, by Dolk.

I already posted about this on my other blog, but I figure this is the kind of thing that should go here from now on.

Over the weekend my wife, my dog Jack and I took a walk to the Brooklynite Gallery in Bed-Stuy to see the Dolk and M-City exhibit before it comes down on the 29th.  The owner was the only person there, and he was extremely nice and even let us take Jack through the museum and into the backyard so he wouldn’t have to sit outside. I’m sure that’s not typical practice, but it was appreciated either way.

Be sure to check out the next installation, featuring British street artists Guy Denning and David Walker, opening on June 10th.

This is something to read

I’ve been kicking around the idea of doing a neighborhood-centric blog some time now, and I’ve finally decided to do it. Please bear with the growing pains around here as I get everything in order, and thanks for checking the blog out.
